Introducing PETOI Bittle: A New Era in Robotic Companions

PETOI’s Bittle is a remarkable innovation in both robotics and AI. Inspired by the success of their previous robotic cat, NYBBLE, PETOI’s founder set out to create a robotic dog that combines playful features with sophisticated technology. Bittle encapsulates this vision in a single, compact device—a robotic pet that is both accessible and highly capable.

Design and Assembly: Building Bittle

An Ingenious Design

PETOI Bittle is not just a technological wonder; it’s a thoughtfully crafted product. Its compact frame, measuring only 20cm x 11cm x 11cm and weighing under 280g, is small enough to sit in the palm of your hand. Assembling Bittle is a little like completing a 3D jigsaw puzzle—a fun and engaging process that takes about an hour. This puzzle-like construction method exemplifies the meticulous engineering behind Bittle, with every component fitting together seamlessly.

Key Components:

  • Body Frame: Bittle’s body frame is designed for easy assembly, with each piece fitting together like a puzzle. This reflects PETOI’s commitment to user-friendly design and customization, making Bittle an ideal project for hobbyists and educators alike.
  • Actuators: Bittle utilizes nine high-quality P1S Coreless Servo motors—eight controlling the walking joints and one dedicated to head movement. An extra motor is included for replacement, ensuring smooth and precise movement.
  • Electronics: Bittle’s brains come in two flavors:
    • NyBoard V1: Equipped with an Atmega328P processor, this board includes a 16MHz CPU, 2KB SRAM, and 32KB flash memory. It supports an 8K I2C EEPROM, an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), a servo driver for 12 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) servos, and an infrared receiver.
    • BiBoard V0: Designed for more advanced applications, this board features an ESP32 processor with a 240MHz dual-core CPU, 520KB SRAM, and up to 16MB flash memory. It includes built-in WiFi/Bluetooth, 12 PWM servo pins, an IMU, an infrared receiver, an audio amplifier, and a speaker.
  • Software: Bittle is powered by the OpenCat code, a substantial 3,000 lines of Arduino code that governs its quadruped movements. Users can modify Bittle’s programming using environments like Arduino IDE, C, and Python, providing flexibility for customization and development.
  • Battery: Bittle runs on a Li-ion battery with built-in charging and protection circuits, offering approximately an hour of continuous operation.

Features and Capabilities

Despite its small size, Bittle is a different breed of robot. It can walk, run, jump, and even sense its surroundings. Bittle follows the instructions it’s given and can be further customized, such as 3D printing new parts—imagine swapping out its head or limbs to create a unique robotic companion!

Cost and Accessibility

One of the most impressive aspects of Bittle is its price. At $195, Bittle is far more affordable than other advanced robotic pets like Boston Dynamics’ Spot, which costs around $75,000. This affordability opens up robotics to a much larger audience, potentially inspiring a new generation of engineers, developers, and tech enthusiasts.

Impact and Future Prospects

Bittle is much more than a toy—it’s a step toward making advanced robotics accessible to everyone. With features that rival more expensive robots, Bittle is a significant addition to the rapidly evolving field of robotics. As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, Bittle exemplifies a vision of what interactive robotic companions could look like in the future—a perfect blend of education, entertainment, and technology in one compact package.
